“Dr. Erik Otterberg met with me in August, 2015, and took x-rays of my left hip.  The hip had been sore for years, but I was not ready to commit to surgery at that time.  Dr. Otterberg reassured me that I could wait for months or years before making the decision to replace the hip. He said that I could wait as long as I could tolerate the discomfort.  My concern was that if I waited too long to have a procedure–it might not be possible if the bone or joint deteriorated to the “point of no return.”  It was comforting to learn from Dr. Otterberg that there was no point of time in the future when he would not be able to help me.  The warm, friendly, and professional demeanor of Dr. Otterberg impressed me!  The fact that he was willing to take as much time as needed to answer my questions helped me to feel relaxed and not hurried.

I decided in early December, 2015, to have the total replacement of the left hip on January 25, 2016.  One of the best decisions I ever made.  The GIKK office and Lakeside Hospital provided me with all of the information I needed to exercise and get ready for the operation.  After the operation, I took pain pills for only seven days and then stopped because the pain was no longer a problem!  After two and a half months, I can walk without a cane or any assistance whatsoever!  Outstanding performance on the part of Dr. Erik Otterberg, his staff, and the Lakeside Hospital staff has been wonderful as well!  Thank you for an experience far better than I ever expected.  Only one regret–I should have had this operation performed two years ago rather than trying to “macho-out” with the pain!

“I have nothing but praise for the group of doctors in this office.  I would highly recommend any one of them at any time. I have had my hip replaced by Dr. Phillips and my shoulder replaced by Dr. Gross. I highly recommend both. They are excellent doctors and take time with you to answer any questions you might have. I have had no problems with either of my replacements which were done back in 2006 and 2008. They have such a wonderful staff also. I have my sister going to Dr. Phillips now and have also recommended him to my daughter.

“Dr. Grier is the reason I am walking today, another doctor told me I wouldn’t. My favorite time was when she had me stand for the first time on my feet and I cried! She is awesome and and a great asset to your team! Dr, Grier you are the BEST!!”

“I am so grateful to Dr. O’Malley for taking the time to listen to me and truly understand what was going on with my knee. I had seen two doctors in Sioux City that did not listen to my symptoms and one even told me that I need to come” to grips with the fact I needed a new knee” (and I am only 46 years old).

Dr. O’Malley sat with my husband and I for 45 minutes listening and explaining in great detail what was going on with my knee. I had surgery on June 20, 2014 with Dr. O’Malley and I am on the road to recovery. Thank you, Dr. O’Malley for listening and truly making me a part of my healthcare. You do not realize the impact you had on my spirit. I was in tears after our first meeting because you took the time to listen and understand! Keep up the great work!”

” I had experienced a major injury to my ankle that left me unable to run and walking with a limp.  I was only 24 years old at the time, with a very active lifestyle playing ice hockey, basketball, and tennis.  I had seen a couple doctors and had x-rays before being referred to GIKK.  It was here I met Dr. David Inda.  He was very professional as well as personable, and was able to determine what was going on in my ankle.  He was straight forward about the surgery procedures and made sure I was comfortable with what he felt would be best for me.  After surgery and a few months of therapy, I immediately noticed a difference.  I was playing hockey again that season and our team went on to win.  But even greater was my appreciation for the abilities I have been given, and for all the wonderful professionals at GIKK and Bergan Mercy.  I can now jog and run again, Thank you so much!

I have seen Dr. Rosipal twice and feel very lucky to have found him.  I expected someone to come in and spend 2 minutes with me.  Didn’t happen.  He made me feeling like I was important.  Took all the time necessary to see I understood what was going on. This guy is great.  I particularly appreciate his concern and compassion.  If you need and orthopedic doctor…here’s your guy.”

” Five years ago I had a compound fracture.  A break to my fibula and my ankle broke through the skin. Dr. Phillips did the surgery, and I recovered quickly.  Within 6 months I was back to lifting weights and feeling normal.  Years later I have no pain and a full range of motion without limits. I cant express how grateful I am. What looked like it could have been a lifetime injury, ended up just being a bump in the road. Thanks again!”

“I suffered for years with pain in my left knee.  Believing that surgery would make it impossible for me to care for my 96 year old father for an extended period of time, I put it off until one day, I could barely walk…even using a crutch.  My goal then became to find a surgeon who used conservative and minimally invasive techniques so that I could get back to a normal routine as quickly as possible.  My research led me to Dr. C. Michael Kelly in Omaha, Nebraska.  I set up a consultation and drove the 200 miles from K.C., MO.

When I arrived for the appointment, I was immediately impressed with the friendliness and efficiency of the staff.  Dr. Kelly proved to be exactly the type of physician I was looking for.  He is high energy and although friendly, all business.  Within less than 30 minutes, I learned more from him about the condition of my knee and a plan to fix it than in all the prior appointments with other doctors through the years.  I had read that approximately 75% of his surgeries involve only partial replacement.  When he sat and faced me with the news that all I needed was a uni-compartmental replacement (just the medial side) I was stunned.  I think I just sat there and stared at him in disbelief.  And when he said I would be in the surgi-center for one night and could go home the next day…well, I can’t even describe my elation.  I was all in.  Three weeks later I had the surgery.  The staff was wonderful.  They made me feel safe and well-cared for.  The patient rooms are very nice with accomodations, including food, for a relative to stay with you if you so desire.  A few hours after recovery, I got up and walked.  The next morning, after successfully demonstrating my ability to climb stairs and take an extended walk, my son drove me home!

I went to physical therapy twice a week for two weeks, and faithfully did the same exercises at home.  I took myself off of the prescribed pain killers and put the walker away the day after I got home. I simply took Tylenol and used ice therapy.  Within 5 days I was driving myself whereever I needed to go…even to the grocery store for my father.  Within two weeks my knee bent “normally” and I walked without a stiff leg or limp.  The doctor used glue to close the wound instead of staples so the relatively short scar is fading nicely.  It’s been almost 4 months since surgery and I have absolutely no complaints.  I’m walking, even running a little, kneeling with no pain, and my life has changed drastically for the better.  My only regret is that I didn’t do my homework sooner.  I am so thankful for Dr. Kelly’s expertise, his conservative approach, and comittment to giving his patients the very best care.  I recommend him very highly.”

“After having gone through 2 shoulder surgeries in one year with very little success, a friend of a friend told me about a doctor in Omaha he seen and was very pleased. I made an appointment with Dr. R. Michael Gross and after a review of what had been done previously he did an ultrasound on my shoulder and within 5 minutes he showed me what needed to be done. I scheduled the 3rd surgery with Dr. Gross. I am now 8 months out of that 3rd surgery and feeling great! Its hard to put into words how mentally worn out I was after the first two unsuccessful surgeries, but thanks to Dr. Gross and his staff, I also have my sanity back along with a shoulder that feels good. All I can say is, I have the utmost respect for Dr. Gross and the whole GIKK staff and I highly recommend them.”

“My ankle became extremely swollen in October 2008. After numerous tests ordered by my GP and specialists in Lincoln, I was in so much pain I couldn’t even take the physical therapy that had been prescribed for lymphedema. My GP ordered x-rays and found the bones in my foot and ankle were broken in multiple places. I was sent to an orthopedic surgeon who wanted to amputate my leg. A second surgeon repeated the recommendation.  I located Dr. Timothy Fitzgibbons at GIKK who immediately recognized I had Charcot which could be treated.  Dr. Fitz didn’t rush into surgery! For over a year, he worked with me and an orthotist to allow me to walk in a boot and then a brace.  Only as my conditioned worsened did Dr. Fitz even mention the “s” word. The surgery was successful, and I have been able to continue my active lifestyle.”

“GIKK Orthopedic has been my choice for any problems concerning what ails me in my shoulders, wrists, and knees.  Each specialists is wonderful in their care and concern and getting you relief so you can live your life like you want again.  Eight years ago Dr. T. Kevin O’Malley performed a partial knee replacement on my left knee and I was up and walking without pain in just a few short weeks.  Five weeks ago he did a total knee replacement on my right knee, and although the first days seemed rough, I am walking really well and with little pain.  He listens to your questions, is very reassuring, and is an excellent surgeon.  I recommend GIKK Orthopedic Specialists to everyone and especially friends and family with knee problems to Dr. T. Kevin OMalley.  A shout out to his caring nurse, Laurie, too!.”

“I was diagnosed with a complete ACL tear and meniscus damage to my left knee by Dr. Kimberly Turman. She recommended surgery for an ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair so I elected to have her perform it. During pre-op and post, I felt the entire surgical staff was very personable and professional in every facet of their job.  In addtion to the surgical staff, Dr. Turman’s nurse, Mindy, is very prompt on returning my calls and she takes the time to explain to me anything I don’t understand.  I started physical rehab four days after my surgery was completed. The physical therapist commented to me during my first session that she never had a patient capable of doing all the exercises I was able to do that close to surgery.  I’m no medical expert here but something tells me that I am very lucky to have such a great surgeon who surrounds herself with an excellent staff.  Dr. Turman, you and your entire team have my personal thanks for taking care of me and I’m looking forward to a full recovery.”

” I have experienced two of the surgeons at GIKK. The first is Dr. Michael Gross who took me through 5 shoulder surgeries following 4 breaks in my shoulder, the last, a partial shoulder replacement. Dr. Gross is the most knowledgable doctor I could have had for my shoulder, and Jill and the rest of his staff were always there to help explain everything that was coming, and that had been done. I have great movement in my shoulder today, and with the accident I had, my shoulder should have been almost useless, if not for Dr. Gross.

Dr. T Kevin O’Malley performed a total knee replacement on my left knee. Because of his skill, I can hardly tell there has been a replacement as my knee has no pain and works totally normally. Lori, his nurse, introducted me to the Joint Camp at Bergan Mercy. I attended a class a month in advance of the surgery that told me EVERYTHING to expect which really cut down on my stress level. And the joint camp, is the most organized, well executed plan for recovery that I could imagine.

Both the doctors above have my heartfelt thanks and gratitude for all they have done for me. They both work closely with the Bergan Outpatient PT department which has the best PTs anywhere.

Thanks GIKK. I know where to go when I need Orthopedic doctors!!.”

“I was referred to Omaha by my Kearney orthopedic doctor for a shoulder problem.  I found that Dr. Rosipal (at GIKK) was a very repectful and caring physician. I had a complete reverse shoulder surgery done, and at 10 months out, I am doing great.  I felt that he was quite knowledgeable and very capable.  His personality helped me get through all this. Thank you for your care, Dr. Rosipal, and I would definitely recommend you!”

“I love the doctors in this office. I had a minor out-patient surgery and all of my appointments leading up to it– I felt I was very informed, I knew what was going to happen.  They did the surgery and care was excellent.  It was overall well worth it and a great experience. I would recommend Dr. Fitzgibbons every time.”

“We all have milestones in life. May 2006 was the onset of one of mine. I met Dr. Kevin O’Malley and the process began for total knee replacement in both knees, done 8 weeks apart. From the beginning the people who cared for me, the facility at Bergan Mercy and the re-hab, also at Bergan, were absolutely wonderful. The kindness, care, and compassion for a 79 year old woman were amazing.

Two years have passed and the results are well worth everything that took place. I am thankful for the entire experience and am especially pleased when I walk down a ramp NO pain.”

“I highly recommend Dr. Timothy Fitzgibbons as a most professional and talented surgeon. Believe me in that since 2005, I have had 26 operations and know who is good and who is not. I first met Dr. Fitzgibbons in 2009 and he surgically operated on my left foot — a Lincoln based surgeon had done it all wrong in York, NE. His (Dr. Fitzgibbon’s) student with him that day even diagnosed the proper procedure to shave down the bone on my foot instead of amputating my leg like the other surgeon wanted to do. If that is not enough testimonial about the quality of care and expertise given by Dr. Fitzgibbons, then her is more.  In 2011, I returned to see him. Two Lincoln based surgeons had severly crippled my other foot to the point where I had osteomyelitis (bone infection). Dr. Fitzgibbons amputated below my knee and according to my prosthesis builder, it is the best surgical procedure he has seen in his 15 year career.  My former primary care physician totally agreed!  Dr. Fitzgibbons has at least given me a chance at regaining some of my previous life that had basically been destroyed by others.

“I had so many people telling me horror stories about having shoulder surgery & my family doc was very much against it. I stuck with Dr. Gross & Jen & they were fantastic in helping me with my shoulder problem in January (SAD with bursectomy) when no other doctor would. I’ll proudly say my recovery was pretty fast & with very little pain & I have full range of motion again . It feels great!!! Dr. Gross was not my first experience with GIKK docs but I too highly recommend the docs at GIKK!! The times Ive seen docs at GIKK, Ive felt Ive gotten what I needed to get better & felt as though I was being heard & cared for! Kuddos GIKK!.”

“As a health care professional, I very much appreciate the care and concern I have received from the GIKK group. Dr. Otterberg is my surgeon and has replaced both hips. He is a highly skilled and has the best interest of the patient at heart. Dr. Otterberg and his assistant, Krista, are the consummate professionals whose demeanor could be an example for others to follow. I have nothing but the highest praise for them and the GIKK associates.”

“I have had knee and hip pain since the early 1990’s. If I stood in line for a couple of minutes or more, my knees would lock up and I would break out in a sweat knowing the pain I would be in when I started to move and unlock them. My regular doctor gave me arthritis medicine but after a while, it didn’t work anymore. I became friends with a woman at work who had a roommate that was a nurse who worked with Dr. Kelly. For 2 years she tried to get me to see him. I finally did and it was the best thing I ever did. I ended up having both partial knee replacements and both hip replacements. I am able to walk again, without pain. I can’t believe the difference it made. I could kick myself for not doing it sooner. Dr. Kelly , the nurses, staff, orthopedic people were wonderful. Joint camp was fun and everyone encouraged each other. After I went home from each surgery, I was only uncomfortable for the first week and by the end of the second week was feeling good enough to go back to work. I took off two weeks for each surgery. Now, I may be able to tolerate pain better than others, but it really wasn’t that bad after the first week. If you are having hip or knee problems, go see Dr. Kelly. I love that man and what he did for me! You will too!.”
—Denise Skarda, Ralston, NE

“Just a short note about replacement surgery. Thinking about it is frightening, but when you go through joint camp there are NO surprises. You start with an information class that explains EVERYTHING. Not once have I regretted any of these decisions. I recently took a trip to Las Vegas. We walked all over the Strip in 108 degree heat. My knees were pain free. Dr. O’Malley, Laurie and his staff are the best. The physical therapy staff are fantastic. If you have a problem they LISTEN, which is not the norm for some others. I have recommended this staff and I will continue to just that. If I had to do everything all over I wouldn’t change anything.””
